The explosion at a fuel depot in Italy leaves two dead and more than a dozen injured. 3 others missing
MILAN– An explosion at a fuel depot in the Tuscany region of central Italy killed at least two people and injured 14 others on Monday, authorities said.
The explosion destroyed an office building, where three people are believed to be missing, regional environment manager Monia Monni told SKY TG24.
The explosion occurred at an ENI fuel depot north of Florence, sending a plume of dark smoke into the air. Witnesses miles away reported a loud bang and shaking.
Italian oil company ENI said the cause of the explosion at the Calenzano depot near Florence was under investigation.
The flames were quickly brought under control, preventing the fire from spreading to storage tanks from a loading dock area where the explosion occurred.
Residents were advised to keep their windows closed, but environmental officials later determined the air quality was safe. The smoke temporarily interrupted regional train service.
