Warning: Do not open windows to cool the house during heatwave | United Kingdom | News

Britain experienced scorching heat over the weekend but people are being urged not to open their windows during the heatwave.

This may seem counterintuitive, given that opening a window seems like the quickest and easiest way to lower the temperature in your home.

This is particularly true during the recent heatwave in the UK, where temperatures soared to between 28°C and 32°C between Friday and Monday.

But heating experts are urging people not to open windows and doors so quickly during scorching temperatures – because sometimes you’ll only make things worse.

BOXT heating experts have revealed that many home cooling tricks aren’t actually effective and can cost you money.

Andy Kerr, founder of BOXT, says: “It can be difficult to get rid of unwanted heat in your home during the summer months, especially when most UK properties are built to retain heat. While using a fan or opening all your windows are often mentioned as effective ways to cool your home, these methods may not deliver the desired results.

“To help homeowners stay cool as the warmer months approach, we’ve revealed which common home cooling tricks are myths and why they don’t work so you can avoid them this summer.”

Open your windows: “When temperatures are particularly warm, opening all of your windows will allow more warm air into your home, warming your home and making you feel warmer.

“Instead of opening all your windows, it’s better to strategically open windows to create cross breezes throughout the day and open your windows at night to let in cooler air.”

BOXT also said it supported the Express’s advice on using electric fans during heatwaves.

“Fans don’t cool the air, they just move it around, which means your room temperature won’t drop. Leaving appliances on in rooms that aren’t being used will also increase your energy bills and cost you more in the long run,” they said.

Andy added: “Ultimately, if you’re looking for an effective long-term solution to keeping your home cool, it’s worth considering installing energy-efficient windows, improving your home’s insulation and ventilation, and installing or upgrading a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. While these upgrades may be more expensive up front, they will ensure your home is effectively cooled in the long term.”
