Shocking footage shows child jumping in front of train at busy station | UK | News

This shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a child jumps under a train as it enters a suburban station.

The harrowing video revealed how the young man was chased onto the tracks at Bramley station in Leeds, West Yorkshire, while with a group of other youths.

And he then showed how the young man apparently begged his friends to let him back onto the platform as a train pulled into the terminal.

Eventually, the child, dressed in a black raincoat and jogging pants, managed to get out of danger.

But later footage appears to show the same child tearing open a plastic trash bag and throwing it onto the track as the train waited to move.

Other CCTV cameras also showed another member of the group jumping onto the tracks after a train had departed.

Other clips taken in Newton Aycliffe and Seaham, both in County Durham, showed other youths jumping onto the tracks and stopping to take photos at a level crossing.

Network Rail has found that trespassing incidents are more common on its North and East lines during the summer months – with 70% reported between April and September last year.

They said the delays caused train delays of almost 12,000 minutes for passengers, the equivalent of more than eight days.

Chloe Creffield, Network Rail’s head of community safety in the North and East, urged those tempted to jump onto the tracks to “remember the consequences”.

She said: “The railway is an incredibly dangerous place and people who trespass are putting themselves in danger and breaking the law.

“We urge people to remember the consequences of trespassing and the devastating impact it can have on themselves, their families, passengers and the wider community, as well as train drivers.

“Closing the railway while we investigate trespassing incidents is disruptive to passengers and also causing costly delays.

“As we approach the summer holidays, we hope the CCTV footage will remind the public to think about their own safety and understand that trespassing on railway lines can put their lives at risk.”

Nationally, statistics show that on average, at least two people risk their lives on the railway every hour.

This summer, the rail industry continues to raise awareness among people living near high-risk areas about the dangers of rail trespassing using the story of Harrison Ballantyne.

He was 11 years old when he lost his life after venturing onto the railway tracks without permission.
