Severino teams with 3 Mets relievers to blank Marlins 1-0

MIAMI — Luis Severino and three relievers combined for a four-hit game as the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Saturday.

Pete Alonso hit a one-out double in the fourth inning and scored when Francisco Alvarez grounded out on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.

Jose Iglesias had two hits for the Mets (50-47), who improved to a 4-4 record against Miami, the worst in the National League this year. They are 26-12 since falling 11 games below .500 on June 2.

It was New York’s second shutout of the season, with both coming in the last six games. Miami was shut out for the 11th time.

Severino (7-3) had seven strikeouts and allowed two hits in six innings. He walked three and hit a batter with a pitch in his eighth straight start of at least six innings.

The Marlins threatened Severino in the sixth inning, when Jake Burger was hit by a pitch and Otto Lopez drew a two-out walk. Severino then threw a wild pitch that advanced both runners, but ended his outing by striking out Nick Gordon.

José Buttó replaced Severino and got three outs in the seventh inning. Dedniel Nuñez struck out all three batters in the eighth inning before Edwin Díaz closed out the game with his 11th save in 16 chances. It was Díaz’s first appearance in Miami since he blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning on May 18.

Marlins starter Roddery Muñoz was relieved after five innings. Muñoz (1-5) allowed three hits, three walks and five strikeouts.

Miami’s starters haven’t won a decision since Jesus Luzardo beat the Mets on June 11.

Both teams went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 total.

TRAINERS’ ROOM

Mets right-handed relief pitcher Sean Reid-Foley (shoulder impingement) will throw live batting practice Monday at the club’s spring training facility in Port St. Lucie.
