The Lake District is home to a charming Cumbrian coastal town with a Victorian promenade, hidden gardens and stunning walks.

Grange-over-Sands lies on the edge of the Cumbrian Lake District. You’ll find this picturesque coastal town boasting stunning views of Morecombe Bay and a mild climate to boot.

Despite its convenient location, it’s tucked away from the bustling tourist crowds of the neighboring hotspot, offering a more relaxed atmosphere while still offering all the beauty.

Known as the ‘Torquay of the North’ in Edwardian times, this description speaks not only to its popularity, but also to the area’s warm microclimate which allows semi-tropical plants to grow easily.

This popular seaside resort located a few miles south of the Lake District National Park is full of wonders with endless autumn walks to soak up its lush surroundings and make the most of the cool of the season.

The town of Grange-over-Sands grew in the Victorian era from a small fishing village to a grand and elegant town with the arrival of the railway in 1857.

Within a few years of the arrival of the railway, the village transformed from an isolated fishing community into a seaside resort with many hotels being built offering the ultimate spa experience thanks to the area’s ideal seaside climate.

Perfectly nestled on the coastline of the Cartmel Peninsula, just seven miles south of Lake Windermere, there are plenty of places to enjoy the grandiose sea views of this pretty coastal town.

Grange’s Victorian promenade takes you along the seafront and offers views of the shores of Morecambe Bay.

The promenade is the region’s key attraction in the city and has been a tourist destination since its construction.

Visitors are strongly advised to prefer enjoying the sea views from the safety of the promenade rather than walking on the salt pans due to the presence of dangerous quicksand.

Away from the dangerous sand, located next to the promenade, the ornamental gardens offer a pleasant place for an autumn stroll admiring the diversity of flora and fauna, affectionately nicknamed by locals “the pond of ducks.”

A few miles west of Grange-over-Sands is the village of Cartmel which is home to Cartmel Racecourse.

The popular racecourse has been in use since 1856 and hosts a number of events throughout the year against the backdrop of the English Lake District.

Grange-over-Sands is located on the Furness line with services to Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Manchester Airport and Preston.

The nearest airport to Grange-over-Sands is Manchester, with Northern Rail operating a train every two hours to Grange-over-Sands.
