Notting Hill Carnival: 5 stabbed, weapons seized and 230 arrested | UK | News
Every year, the Notting Hill Carnival weekend is one of the busiest for emergency services in and around London, and this year was no different, with the Metropolitan Police revealing tonight that in the county they made at least 230 arrests for crimes, including five horrific stabbings.
The event, which took place on Sunday and Monday, attracted around a million people over the bank holiday weekend, with around 7,000 police officers on duty throughout the celebrations. The carnival is Europe’s largest street party and is billed by organisers as “the biggest community event on the planet”.
And while the vast majority of people behaved well, a number ended up in police cells for criminal offences. The Metropolitan Police has released an update detailing the number of offences it dealt with during the event.
At 10.45pm on Monday 26 August, police confirmed that three firearms had been seized, two at the carnival and one during a traffic stop in Harrow involving individuals believed to be travelling to the event. There had also been five stabbings, two incidents where the victims suffered slash injuries and “one incident involving a corrosive substance”, police said.
Shockingly, two of the stabbed people are in critical condition. The 32-year-old woman stabbed on Sunday is still fighting for her life in hospital in critical condition. A total of 230 people have been arrested and 35 police officers have been injured.
A breakdown of offences for Monday’s arrests was uploaded to the Metropolitan Police website and shared on their social media channels.

As of 11pm last night, police confirmed that only a small number of people remained in the vicinity of the Carnival. A police spokesperson confirmed that officers remained on scene to ensure any further incidents were dealt with.
As with many large gatherings, the Metropolitan Police have put in place a Section 60 order “for the carnival area from 6.05pm to 2am”, giving police greater stop and search powers. Police said the order also gives officers the power to demand the removal of masks used to conceal a person’s identity and anyone who refuses can be arrested.
Ahead of this year’s Carnival, CEO Matthew Phillip said the event could provide a good opportunity for communities to unite following the riots that have swept the UK in recent weeks.
He said: “If you come to Carnival at the weekend you will see people from all walks of life, from all backgrounds, feeling comfortable with each other and having fun. As well as the economic benefits Carnival brings to the UK, it is just as important as bringing people together to party.
“We are all human beings and it is important to come together to celebrate, and it is still relevant, some would say even more so, given what has happened across the UK. This is the biggest celebration of inclusion and diversity that the UK has ever seen, or indeed Europe, and it is very important that it remains that way.”
