Millions of Britons warned ahead of chaotic weekend on UK roads | United Kingdom | News
Britons planning to travel this weekend have been warned they face road carnage as millions of motorists are expected to clog motorways and trunk roads.
The RAC has predicted that a staggering 13.8 million drivers plan to hit the road for their Friday to Sunday holiday, making it the second busiest summer holiday since 2015.
Last year was just shy of the summer of 2015, when 18.8 million cars hit the road during the scorching heatwave that followed Covid.
Friday is expected to be the busiest day of the weekend, with about 3.2 million drivers expected to join the usual group of commuters.
On Saturday, around 3.6 million drivers will be present according to the RAC, while on Sunday there are expected to be 2.9 million.
In particular, the M5 is expected to see heavy traffic as drivers try to get to Devon and Cornwall to enjoy the West Country sunshine.
Alice Simpson from the RAC has given motorists her top tips for avoiding the worst delays: “To avoid a weekend of misery on the roads during one of the busiest times of the year, we are advising as many people as possible to leave as early as possible to try to spread car journeys over a longer period.
“All holidaymakers, whether driving within the UK or abroad, should plan their trip carefully and allow plenty of extra time before setting off.”
Bob Pishue of Inrix Transportation said, “Drivers should expect long lines on major roads as they travel to and from their destinations during this summer getaway.”
He added that a little smart thinking could stave off the holiday blues, suggesting: “Being flexible with your itinerary, whether that’s departure time or a longer journey in miles with fewer delays, could also reduce the stress of being delayed and make the journey more enjoyable.”
