Hernandez, Ohtani homer as Dodgers beat Phillies 5-3 in NL division-leading opener
LOS ANGELES — Teoscar Hernández hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the third inning, Shohei Ohtani homered deep into the eighth and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 on Monday night in a matchup of the NL division leaders.
Tyler Glasnow (9-6) had nine strikeouts and allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. The right-hander has a career-high 164 strikeouts this season.
Glasnow retired players in order four times, including getting strikeouts of Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper in the first inning.
Harper was struck out three times in total as the National League East-leading Phillies lost for the seventh time in eight games after taking a 2-0 lead with two outs in the second inning.
Freddie Freeman returned to the Dodgers after missing eight games to care for his sick 3-year-old son. He went 1 for 4.
The National League West-leading Dodgers scored four runs in the third inning. Andy Pages doubled to the left-field corner and Ohtani tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to the right-field warning track for his 80th RBI of the season. Hernández followed with his 24th home run to left field for a 4-2 lead against Aaron Nola (11-5).
Daniel Hudson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his eighth save.
After Schwarber singled, Glasnow failed to ground Harper with two strikes in the sixth inning, and he hit a double down the left-field line. Schwarber scored on Alec Bohm’s hit, bringing the Phillies within 4-3.
Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda pitched a scoreless eighth inning, leaving Schwarber and Bohm stranded.
Ohtani’s 34th home run extended the Dodgers’ lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Center fielder Brandon Marsh made an unnecessary leap toward the wall as Ohtani was coming back toward first base, apparently to make sure he had touched base before completing his home run.
The Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak against the Phillies, their longest active streak against any opponent. They were swept in three games in Philadelphia last month.
Will Smith and Kiké Hernández are the only Dodgers without a hit.
