Cyclist dies of injuries 17 years after being hit by 999 police car | UK | News

A teenager who was hit by a police car with a faulty siren has died 17 years later from injuries sustained in the crash, an inquest has heard.

Greg Love died in January from severe brain injuries after being knocked off his BMX bike in December 2006, aged 13.

The car was responding to an emergency call in Bournemouth. The brain damage Greg suffered left him confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. A scan carried out a few weeks before his death showed Greg, 31, needed a major bowel operation to survive. But his family decided the risks of the operation would leave him with such a low quality of life that they began a palliative care process.

He died at his nursing home in Ferndown, Dorset, on January 3. The cause of death was listed as intestinal ischaemia, pneumonia, head trauma and epilepsy. Greg was cycling home from an RAF cadet course. He was not wearing his safety helmet.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission found that the driver was not at fault. It was accepted that the vehicle’s siren was not operating at the time of the incident and was faulty.

The Bournemouth inquest jury has returned a narrative verdict.

They said: “He died from injuries sustained in the incident.”
