Contreras hits game-winning double in ninth as Brewers beat Cubs 3-2
CHICAGO — William Contreras hit a game-tying double in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Wednesday.
Blake Perkins singled in the top of the ninth against Héctor Neris (8-3). Contreras gave Milwaukee the lead one out later when he doubled to left-center field, helping the National League Central leaders end a tough day on a winning note.
Before the game, the Brewers placed Christian Yelich on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation and were preparing for the possibility of their All-Star outfielder missing significant time.
Milwaukee reliever Bryse Wilson entered in the second inning and held Chicago to one run in four innings. Jakob Junis (3-0) then pitched one-hit ball for three innings before Joel Payamps recorded his fifth save in the ninth inning.
Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang each singled and the Brewers won despite 10 stranded runners.
Seiya Suzuki doubled and scored in the first inning against Milwaukee opener Rob Zastryzny. Suzuki gave Chicago a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a solo home run off Wilson.
Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits. The left-hander left the game with a 2-1 lead, with runners on first and second, after striking out Garrett Mitchell.
Tyson Miller came in and allowed back-to-back singles to pinch hitters Jake Bauers and Turang as Milwaukee tied the game at 2. But the Brewers settled for just one run despite loading the bases, when Perkins forced a runner in and Joey Ortiz hit a fly to right.
