Alton Towers witnessed a chaotic scene as its famous Wicker Man rollercoaster was abruptly evacuated after smoke was seen rising into the sky on Friday.

The incident occurred at the popular theme park near Stoke-on-Trent, prompting immediate action from park officials and security staff.

Images shared on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, showed smoke rising from the Wicker Man ride, alarming visitors and causing widespread concern.

“Our technical team quickly attended to the smoke and followed well-established procedures to resolve the issue quickly,” said a spokesperson for Alton Towers Resort. “Wicker Man is constructed with treated timber which prevents the ignition of fire.

“At this point, we believe the cause of the smoke is a foreign object.”

In light of the incident, the attraction has been closed for “essential maintenance.” Guest safety remains the park’s top priority, and the attraction will remain closed until further notice to ensure thorough inspections and repairs are completed.

The Wicker Man, which opened in spring 2018, is Alton Towers’ first wooden roller coaster in more than two decades, built at a cost of £16 million.

It contains 7.5 thousand tons of wood and reaches a speed of 74 km/h. Known for its thrilling experience and unique design, it has become a favorite among park visitors.

The park’s technical team quickly attended the scene after receiving reports of smoke, ensuring that all safety protocols were strictly followed.

In addition to the Wicker Man incident, Alton Towers is working on several other attractions. Recently, it was announced that the Hex ride, a “dark walk-through ride,” would be reopening after undergoing “extended maintenance.” The park has incorporated new technology and effects to enhance the experience, promising guests an exciting and improved attraction come the fall.
