British police charge 17-year-old with murder after knife attack leaves 3 dead in UK

A 17-year-old man has been charged with the murder of three girls in a stabbing attack in Southport, England, and 10 counts of attempted murder, authorities said Wednesday night.

Police said the defendant, whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons, would appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, August 1. He is also charged with possession of a sharp object.

Three children were killed and nine others injured in the stabbing on Monday, police said. Two adults were also injured while trying to protect the children, police said.

Merseyside Police said the children were attending a Taylor Swift-themed event at a dance school at the time.

Police had previously announced the arrest of a 17-year-old from Banks, a coastal village in Lancashire just outside Southport, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The suspect was born in Cardiff, Wales, police said.
