Brice Turang’s eighth-inning hit gives Brewers 1-0 win over Cubs
CHICAGO — Brice Turang drove in the only run on a ground ball in the eighth inning to spoil a great start by Chicago’s Jameson Taillon, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Trevor Megill worked the ninth for his 20th save and scored the game-winner against Elvis Peguero (6-3), the second of Milwaukee’s four relievers.
Taillon (7-5) worked the first 7 1/3 innings for Chicago, but left after allowing two singles. Julian Merryweather, fresh off the injured list, came in to provide Turang’s hit that scored Jake Bauers.
“Our pitchers stopped them,” Turang said. “I was just happy to score a run.”
The Cubs loaded the bases in the eighth inning against Jared Koenig, but came away empty-handed after the left-hander forced pinch-hitter David Bote to steal.
Colin Rea pitched the first five innings for the Brewers, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He loaded the bases in the second inning, but escaped by inducing a groundout that ended the inning.
“It’s a great win,” Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said. “We kept our composure.”
Taillon, looking to win his fourth straight start, allowed four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
“The results were pretty good,” Taillon said. “Honestly, I didn’t feel my best, but that’s kind of been a theme this year. Just finding a way to get there and finding a way to be creative with the pitch mix and get contact on my terms and pitches in my right areas.”
Nico Hoerner had two hits for the Cubs.
The match started almost 90 minutes late after a quick but violent thunderstorm.

Brewers: All-Star outfielder Christian Yelich left the field in the sixth inning with back soreness, and Murphy said he feared Yelich would need a stint on the injured list. … Koenig took a ground ball from Hoerner on the back of his right thigh in the eighth inning but remained on the mound after a visit from the training staff.
FOLLOWING
The Cubs send left-handed pitcher Justin Steele (2-4, 3.07 ERA) to the mound for the series finale Wednesday. Milwaukee plans a bullpen game.
