Beetlejuice Scares Transformers for Third Week as Box Office No. 1
LOS ANGELES — It’s a triple success for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”.
The sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 horror comedy topped the North American box office for the third consecutive weekend with $26 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The film beat out the new animated film “Transformers: One,” which grossed $25 million. Paramount Pictures’ Optimus Prime origin story stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson.
“Beetlejuice,” a Warner Bros. release that returns Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder in the lead roles, has grossed more than $226 million domestically in three weeks after a monstrous $110 million opening — the third-best of the year — and a $51.6 million second weekend.
Third place goes to James McAvoy’s horror film “Speak No Evil,” which earned $5.9 million in its second week, for a total of $21.5 million.
Overall, the box office was in a quiet phase that should end when ” Joker: Madness for Two ” dances on the big screen on October 4.
The second largest turnover of the year” dead Pool & Wolverine ” remained in the top five in its ninth weekend with an additional $3.9 million and a domestic total of $627 million. Only Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” grossed more.
Body horror film “The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat and starring Demi Moore, which made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival, grossed $3.1 million on limited screens in its opening weekend, landing it in sixth place.
The Daily Wire’s “Am I Racist?” — in which conservative columnist Matt Walsh poses as a “DEI intern” — remained in the top 10 after a fourth-place finish last week, earning $2.9 million for seventh place and a two-week total of $9 million.
