At least five Secret Service officials involved in planning Trump’s rally in Butler have been placed on administrative leave

At least five U.S. Secret Service officials involved in planning Donald Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman tried to kill the former president have been placed on administrative leave, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Officials are still working but are not allowed to participate in anything operational, including security planning, the sources told ABC News.

The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility investigation has intensified, and while the investigation has focused on failures, mistakes and planning leading up to Butler, the investigation is now focusing on a number of issues, including the number of classified threats made against former President Trump by Iran and what the agency did in response in terms of security to the new intelligence.

An official told ABC News that means even higher-ranking officials could be involved in the investigation.

“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to investigating personnel decisions and actions related to the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump,” the agency said. “The U.S. Secret Service mission review is progressing, and we are examining the processes, procedures, and factors that led to this operational failure.”
