Angry mob beats rioter with wooden poles on Middlesborough Street | UK | News
A gang of men were filmed beating people in the street with sticks as serious violence spread across Middlesbrough yesterday.
Shocking videos showing several men attacking individuals or small groups have been shared on social media.
In one video, shared on X, a group of about eight men appear to beat a hooded man with sticks as he struggles on the ground and another man films the attack.
It was on Parliament Road in Middlesbrough that a car was set alight earlier during scenes of chaos, with a vigilante group responding with even more violence.
In another video filmed on the same street, apparently from above from a window, what appears to be the same crowd, beats three men, who manage to get away and leave the area, while a fourth films the event.
A message accompanying the clip read: “Intense street fighting breaks out on Parliament Road in Middlesbrough after a car was set on fire earlier. Stay safe and avoid the area.”
Another said: “There was no reason for the far-right ‘peaceful protesters’ to march down Parliament Road.
“It wasn’t part of their demonstration route. It’s almost a mile out of their route from where this is happening. They didn’t need to go there. Farage, Robinson and their ilk are to blame.”
Earlier in the day, a car was set on fire on the same road at around 4:30 p.m.
Hundreds of people gathered in the city centre on Sunday for what was described as a 2pm protest.
People initially stood peacefully before a march began, but it degenerated into chaos and police riot vans and officers carrying shields flooded the city.
In another Sky News report, a group of men appeared behind the presenter, three of them apparently carrying a machete, a large knife and a piece of metal.
Cleveland police have been contacted for comment on the videos of the attacks. They said in a statement that “the violent disorder has now ended”.
A spokesperson said: “A police presence will remain in the town today and in the coming days to provide reassurance and be available to address any public concerns. A full investigation is currently underway.”
The total number of arrests made so far in connection with Sunday’s violence is 43. The events follow a week of violence across the country during protests organized by far-right and anti-immigration groups.
Riots intensified in Hartlepool on Wednesday night, as well as in London and Manchester, while another took place in Sunderland on Friday night.
Rioting broke out in Southport on Tuesday following the shocking stabbing deaths the previous day of three girls, Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six.
Eight other children and two adults were seriously injured in the attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the city.
Axel Rudakubana, 17, born in Cardiff, Wales, to Rwandan parents, has been charged with three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
The riots were sparked by rumours spread online that the suspect was a radical Muslim immigrant.
